Kan-Ho-One

SOWING(種まき)
Twenty-five years ago there were few textbooks for the study of the Korean language, and fewer teachers who were capable of teaching it. A language course of three years had just been decided upon by the older missionaries for the benefit of the younger.
In those days a language school was out of the question. Getting the language then was a slow and sometimes painful process.
Moreover, the Mission Hospital was a collection of disconnected little native buildings which were to be connected before patients could be suitably cared for by women who as yet knew nothing about trained nursing.
By what name should we call a Korean nurse?
Never in all the centuries of their history had a woman become a full-fledged nurse.
With the aid of a scholarly Korean gentleman it was decided that a Korean nurse should be known as “Kan-Ho-One.”
This we believed would most nearly convey to the Korean mind our high ideal of the English word nurse.
From the beginning of our organization our program for the pupil nurses aimed to deal with the Spiritual, Educational, and Social Life of the individual nurse in preparation for her eminent service to the sick.
